Internationally acclaimed and admired for his stunning images, photographer, printer and author Dave Butcher uses his thirty years of experience and knowledge of traditional darkroom skills to great effect, producing breathtaking, atmospheric photographs and prints.
Working exclusively in black and white, Dave produces stunning landscapes, dramatic city and coastal shots and skiing and snowshoeing images. He chooses black and white because it is such a powerful medium to convey drama and atmosphere, allowing the viewer to consider images in terms of shapes, pattern, brightness and tone.
His style conveys a depth of emotion often described as “moving” and “inspirational”. Sometimes he chooses a subject for its grand view or its beauty and at other times he seeks to portray the awesome or frightening nature of a scene - especially mountains.
Dave Butcher’s images are used for advertising and P.R. and he has also published a number of books of his own. His hand-made original prints adorn many a business and home, and are displayed in numerous private collections worldwide. He also undertakes commercial commissions from a number of clients such as hotels and interior designers.
Dave is an Ilford Master Printer and is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society. His work can be seen at numerous exhibitions and shows worldwide and a massive selection of prints can be purchased from his main sitte: www.davebutcher.co.uk
Dave shares his techniques gained whilst working for llford Photo by running black and white photography courses and printing workshops from his studio in the Peak District. Photography courses are held here, as well as in other stunning locations such as the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland and Scotland. He also provides workshops and lectures to schools, colleges and clubs situated throughout the U.K.
Held in small groups (five at maximum) with tutors Dave and Jan Butcher, these courses are suitable for users of film and digital cameras, from low cost pocket-sized compacts to digital SLRs and medium format. They balance art and technique with practical one-to-one tuition and guidance on location.
Courses cover composition, use of light, coloured filters for film users, filtering for digital users, light meters and exposure (including histograms on digital cameras) and the use of tripods. Suitable for complete beginners to experienced photographers.
Personal tuition is available on either an individual basis or for a small group of friends in areas throughout the UK, and can also be arranged for dates outside of the normal courses calendar.
Hosted at his own gallery in Tunstead Milton in the heart of the picturesque Peak District, students can learn (or improve upon existing knowledge of) processing and printing techniques specific to black and white photography.
